[Discussion] Why is wearing two watches (one on each wrist) so polarizing?

Main Post:

I’ve worn two watches, a mechanical watch on my left wrist and an Apple Watch on my right, for about 5 years. I love my mechanical watches for the same reasons that most people on this sub do, and I wear the Apple Watch because it’s incredibly useful, both for communication and especially for health monitoring and tracking (I even wear it while I sleep).

I do this every day, at work and play, in meetings with thousands of people over the 5 years, I do it while traveling (mostly throughout Europe and the US but also Africa and Asia), I do it while on stage and in videos viewed by many people, I do it with long sleeves and in the summer with short sleeves... and the only people who ever notice are watch enthusiasts. And their reactions are a mix of confusion and sometimes mild outrage.

I just don’t really understand how something so innocuous can spur so many strong reactions. I saw that Hodinkee posted about it last year and many people in the comments were full on angry about it. It boggles my mind.

In my experience it doesn’t matter or even register to the average person, but it seems to matter a great deal to watch enthusiasts. What gives?

Top Comment: By their nature, watches are tools which show time: this would imply that one should wear only one watch as wearing two doesn't really give much functional advantage (the second watch may even just get in the way!) On the other hand, no one really needs a watch these days, so they are more and more just "jewelry which happen to tell time", thus making it more acceptable to wear two at the same time. Having a "jewelry watch" (regular watch) and an Apple watch/fitness tracker at the same time absolutely makes sense, as they kinda serve a different purpose (even if the Apple watch does show time too). I'd still say wear whatever you like, most people aren't going to pay attention anyway. I rarely, but sometimes wear two watches at the same time, usually to keep an automatic watch I plan to wear more in a few days still running.

[Mido Commander] I stumble upon these 2 mido commanders and I think they look very nice. Which would you choose if you have to pick 1?

Main Post:

I do own a Mido OceanStar39, the blue and black dial. I think the feeling for that piece is very nice. I heard alot about the commander which is the line that is found in 1900s. The line is full different variations and I believe collectors tend to have 1 of this in their collection. If you have to pick 1 of the 2 , which would you pick?

[Rolex Explorer ii] picked up this weekend

Main Post:

My family and I moved to Seattle at the start of 2023 and at the time I was looking to buy my first newer Rolex. I had previously purchased a 1976 two tone Datejust with champagne dial for my wife.

I visited the Rolex store in Seattle and spoke with a few of the folks there who were really helpful. Ended up expressing interested in a 41mm Datejust or an Explorer ii.

Months went by with some communication back and forth however no watches. They were great about checking in and making sure I was still interested.

I ended up buying a Datejust from a friend in the middle of 2023 thinking I’d never get a call from the AD.

Fast forward to last week, almost 18 months, and they rang to let me know they had an Explorer ii for me. Very strange timing as I was in the middle of negotiating a trade to trade my Omega Speedmaster & Tudor Pelagos 39 for a 16570 Explorer ii so now I’m looking to sell those privately.

Very happy with the Explorer ii. The black marker surrounds pop really well off the white and make for such a legible dial. My datejust has a white dial with stick markers and white gold surrounds which looks totally different.

This will be my daily wear and one day will go to my kids along with the Datejust.

[Farer] Pendine II - thoughts after 1.5 months (hint: it's great)

Main Post: [Farer] Pendine II - thoughts after 1.5 months (hint: it's great)

Top Comment: Some of you may remember a little while ago I made a post about my search for a new chronograph. I wanted something with a light dial, colored accents, and 40mm or under. I had it narrowed down to the CW C3 Grand Tourer (which has since become unavailable on the CW site), and this Farer. Decided on this one back in November and I've had it in regular rotation since then, so here are some thoughts: First, at risk of sounding too negative, here's what I think about the three common criticisms I've seen online. I don't want to sound cynical, I just want to present my point of view on the issues people seem to have with this watch. No, I don't think the subdials cut away from the numerals too much. There's only so much you can do to fit everything on a dial inside a 39.5mm case. I would have liked it less if they'd shrunk the subdials to fit within the numerals. I also would've been bothered if the numerals were just slightly cut off, as if by mistake or afterthought. No, I quite like the way it's designed. The mint green numerals are not as illegible as they seem to appear in some photos and videos. Legibility is excellent in all lighting conditions, at least for me. I don't think it's too expensive for a quartz watch. Fit and finish are excellent. I like the design and functionality. It feels good. And it's really no different from spending a few grand on a BB58, when something like a Kamasu can reasonably perform just as well. In this hobby, we often spend illogical amounts of money on watches just because we like them. Besides that, I've been quite happy with it. The packaging was quite nice, which of course is not the main point of buying a watch, but a first impression makes a difference. Something I love about microbrands is the attention to the customer, in this case manifested through a handwritten note of thanks from someone at the company. The length of the hands is spot on all the way around (yep, all 7 of them) and the syringe tip that extends ALL THE WAY to the minute track is quite nice. The color matched date wheel is big enough to be legible without being obtrusive, and the vintage typeface of the digits is very pleasing. The case shape, the contrasting brushed and polished surfaces, the box sapphire crystal, and the bronze capped crown all make for a well designed piece. What didn't I like? The strap, though I never tend to like OEM straps all that much. They had a plethora of choices, but none of them really spoke to me. Wound up buying a blue suede strap and swapping their signed buckle onto it. I did like the buckle quite a bit. Oh, and the functionality - it's a flyback AND a rattrapante. Very cool. Do I actually need either of those things? Of course not, but the flyback makes it marginally easier when I cook rice, and it's fun to play around with sometimes. As with sports cars, it's not about how often you actually drive at top speed, it's more about knowing that you can. I tried to get all 7 hands visible in that first wrist shot, and the wheel shot is in standard timekeeping mode (any guesses on the vehicle?). Included a lume shot too. Overall, very happy with it. It's probably in the collection to stay. Thanks for reading!

[ORIENT] Orient FAB II

Main Post: [ORIENT] Orient FAB II

Top Comment:

This is the my new Orient FAB II. It was created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Brazilian EDA (Esquadrilha Da Fumaça - Smoke Squadron). Only 777 (Ha! Coincidence?) of these watches were made.

It's 44 millimeters wide with 100m water resistance. It has sapphire glass and the case and the "metal" strap is 100% titanium. It has a calendar (date only), a chronograph and on the left side you can see EDA's logo (eagle with lightning bolt + small airplanes flying).

It also comes with two NATO straps: a black one and a green one. Also, like I mentioned before, a black titanium metal strap.

In the back you can see EAD's logo together with the limited edition number (in this case 341/777).

IMO, this is just a gorgeous watch. The color, the dial (and all the numbers and letters around it). It reminds of the Omega Speedmaster with the black dial and white lettering.

What do you think?
